Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to receive? Typical turnaround time is about 3 weeks. We keep our site headline updated with current turnaround times.

Can I paint more than one animal on my painting?  Yes! You can do single, double, triple, or quadruple pet portraits. Please make sure photos are from similar lighting & eye level. Your pets do not have to be in the same photo, we can work some magic and put them on one canvas based on individual photos. This is actually preferable to make sure you have high quality photos of each pet.

Can I use a combination of photos? Each pet paint by number will be based off of one photo (2, 3, or 4 pets per canvas can be based on multiple photos), but let us know if you have a favorite in your order notes. Please note in the ‘special instructions’ box when ordering if you have small edits like collar color changes, adding a name on your art, etc.

Can multiple people work on the same painting? Yes! Each kit comes with 5-7 brushes, so there will be plenty of brushes for two people to work on one canvas. We wouldn’t recommend three people working on one canvas, it’s simply too small for that many people to be comfortable painting around it.

Bulk discounts? Yes! We do group orders all the time. If you’re ordering more than $400 of painting kits we are more than happy to send you a 20% off bulk discount. Use the code BULKDISCOUNT.

How long do they take to paint? Times will vary based on pet and person, but average is about 3-6 hours for most kits. Paint your state kits will take more time.

What to do if my paints dried out? When you are ready to paint, please order new paints at here

Is my phone camera good enough to use for my photos? Yes! Our artists are drawing by hand. They all have backgrounds and degrees in illustration, so your blurry photo from 1996 is completely okay. A photo of an old photo is totally okay. Do your best to avoid glare marks if taking a photo of a photo. We try to get the best photos from you that you have, but we can work with what you’ve got. If your photo won't work, we will email you and offer a refund or ask for more photos.

What background color would look good with my photo? Lighter colored animals look best with dark colored backgrounds (gray blue, dark teal, purple, blue, dark gray, maroon, emerald). Dark colored animals look good with light colored backgrounds (light pink, light teal, light blue, lavender, lime, yellow, orange, coral, light gray) If you have a mix of dark fur and light fur, chose something bright and fun and in the middle (light teal, dark teal, dark pink, orange, red, coral, lime). Typically brown colored animals look best with cool colors, meaning blue, teal, purple, green type of colors. Black, white, or gray colored animals look great with warm or cool colors.

Can you rush my order? Sometimes… please reach out to Hello@grayduckart.com to see if we can make it happen for you. Generally speaking a rush order would be shipping in 10 days and a non-rush order would ship in about two or four weeks.

Can you combine my photos into one painting if I am doing a multi pet canvas? Yes! And actually, we prefer that. Our artists are pros at putting two photos together into one painting. We can get the spacing and layout more accurate this way.

Can kids do this? Yes! Typically kids over 8 can do this on their own. We typically recommend some parent help if kids are under 8. Our paint is not washable, so make sure their painting shirt is on. Our outlines are more simple than many other paint by numbers you may find online, but if you’d like to be sure your child can do it, feel free to request a simplified outline when you order. You can do this by making a note in your special request box on the order form.

Where is GDA located? We ship from the Twin Cities (Minnesota), and have most of our team here. We also have artists in Louisiana, California, Colorado, Wisconsin, Texas, and Virginia.
